Bondi Beach is leading a double life. On the surface it’s all sparkly waves, dustings of sand and bronzed backpackers.
On closer inspection, the neighbourhood reveals other sides to its personality.
Houses in Bondi Beach come in all shapes and sizes. Foodies are spoilt for choice. Classic hits such as Sean’s Panorama, Icebergs Dining Room and Bar and Speedos Cafe share the scene with a fresh crop of restaurants, cafes and bars. Among the (relative) newcomers, The Pacific Club, A Tavola, China Diner, Panama House, Fonda and Tipica are standouts.
Bondi Beach is the health-conscious hipster of the east, where juice is served cold-pressed, exercise gear is made from recycled plastic bottles and linen is available in any colour you like, as long as it’s terracotta or oatmeal.
Art deco apartments and semis are a popular style in the suburb.
“Over the past five years, Bondi has definitely changed – it’s gotten so much better,” says Hannan Bouskila, associate director at Raine & Horne Bondi Beach and Double Bay.

Domain Group data records a 40 per cent rise in the median unit price in the five years to December 2019. Several high-profile sales have made the headlines, including James Packer’s record $29 million for his Campbell Parade house.
“In apartments, you’ve got a lot of art deco, which is very popular,” Bouskila says. “There are also a lot of art deco houses and semis, as well a play on the older-style Federation homes where owners have put a more modern feel to it. They sell really well.”
Bondi Road plays host to some of the best food and shopping in the suburb.
Workers can bus it to the CBD or to Bondi Junction then a train to the city, while car-share networks are heavily subscribed.
Home to a mix of people, Bondi Beach has something for everyone.
“What we love about the suburb is the people – it really is a diverse and interesting community that is really supportive. The ocean is a great leveller. People here are not so concerned with what you are wearing or how much money you make.”
